Before we tell you more about this powerful DVD, here’s some advice on how to prepare for the role play scenarios:
HOW TO PREPARE FOR ROLE PLAY SCENARIO
To begin with you need to read the briefing pack. What does it tell you about the scenario and are there any clues that dictate how you should respond to the situation? Remember to look at the six core behavioural skills that you are being assessed against. In the majority of prison officer role play scenarios you will need to use ‘non-verbal listening’ skills. This can be done by utilising effective body language and facial expressions.
As a prison officer you will be required to deal with situations on a daily basis. It is important to treat the role play seriously, take notes relevant to the facts and deal with it quickly and appropriately. Remember to respect diversity at all times.
Once you have listened to what the role actor is saying, you will need to ask probing questions ‘exploring and clarifying’ exactly what has happened before you make a judgement.

TIPS FOR DEALING WITH THE ROLE PLAY ACTOR
- Don’t forget to cover every core behavioural skill during the scenario. The scenario will last for 10 minutes so you will need to interact with the role actor. You have plenty of time to ‘suspend judgement’, so use the time wisely.
- Use facial expressions and words to demonstrate that you understand what the person is going through. This is very important.
- Use open body language and face the role actor.
- Use keywords and phrases when communicating with the role actor that are relevant to the core behavioural skills. E.g. ‘I want to explore further what has happened here.’, ‘Let me clarify exactly what has happened’.
